Music
Music provides a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate, it provides opportunities for expression and creativity. Music at Windmill is a vehicle for personal expression, and it can play an important part in the personal development of our pupils. Music allows pupils to reflect and links closely with their overall personal and social development. Although a creative and enjoyable activity, music can also be a highly academic subject with many pathways that lead to further study or vocation.
If any pupil wishes to learn an instrument we try to match their aspirations with our available musicians from the Barnet Education Arts Trust BEAT or their partner organisations English Folk Dance and Song Society. We currently have a Ukelele tutor visiting from BEAT and our own violin tutor Myfanwy Dymond.
Learning a musical instrument, or even how to read music notation, also takes great motivation and our music lessons encourage this. Music reflects the culture and society we live in, and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world they live in and develops curiosity for different cultures and ideas. It also plays an important part in helping children feel part of a community. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills, to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms. We promote inclusion to the Barnet Music Festival in 2023-2024 Windmill pupils participated in the Barnet Music Festival at the Arts Depot with the English Folk Society presenting their sea shanties.
